Neck Pain

Neck Pain Overview

Neck pain is a very common condition and can result from poor posture, improper sleeping position, sprains, arthritis, accidents, or overuse.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the neck that may worsen with movement (e.g., driving, working on a computer)

  • Muscle tightness or limited range of motion

  • Headaches

  • Tingling or numbness radiating to the arms (in some cases)

Causes

  • Cervical spondylosis: Age-related degeneration of the spine’s joints, discs, and bones

  • Disc degeneration: Loss of disc cushioning due to wear and tear

  • Herniated or ruptured disc: When the disc bulges or ruptures, compressing nearby nerves

  • Cervical radiculopathy: Nerve root compression causing pain, numbness, or tingling that may travel to the arm

  • Spinal stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal leading to nerve compression and radiating arm pain

Diagnosis

A full medical history and physical examination are essential. Additional tests may include X-rays, CT scans, MRI, or EMG/nerve studies to evaluate nerve compression or disc problems.
