Neck Pain
Neck Pain Overview
Neck pain is a very common condition and can result from poor posture, improper sleeping position, sprains, arthritis, accidents, or overuse.
Symptoms
Pain in the neck that may worsen with movement (e.g., driving, working on a computer)
Muscle tightness or limited range of motion
Headaches
Tingling or numbness radiating to the arms (in some cases)
Causes
Cervical spondylosis: Age-related degeneration of the spine’s joints, discs, and bones
Disc degeneration: Loss of disc cushioning due to wear and tear
Herniated or ruptured disc: When the disc bulges or ruptures, compressing nearby nerves
Cervical radiculopathy: Nerve root compression causing pain, numbness, or tingling that may travel to the arm
Spinal stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal leading to nerve compression and radiating arm pain
Diagnosis
A full medical history and physical examination are essential. Additional tests may include X-rays, CT scans, MRI, or EMG/nerve studies to evaluate nerve compression or disc problems.
